What to wear... grab those Wranglers from your bottom dresser drawer and that black Stetson from the top shelf of your closet. And where's that red bandana? Oh, the kids used it to play "bad guys" Did you find your boots? In the mud room? Ok, take one last look in the mirror, are you ready... it's RODEO time!
Red Bluff is celebrating 87 years of mutton bustin', bull ridin', flag wavin' and clowin' around. In this issue, we are featuring some of the most beautiful participants in the Rodeo... the women. More than just pretty faces, women like Bobby Stone are creating legacies with trick and fancy riding, performing all over the world. Not only do these women ride, they love the life, "working outdoors, around livestock and with nice, grounded people who live the western lifestyle," says Janelle Kish, who, with her husband, Don, owns a stock contracting company on their Red Bluff ranch. Those involved in the Redding Women's Rodeo Association love the culture that goes with it.
Another culture that has its own share of fans is themusic culture, especially when it comes to vinyl. Rockin' Ron Sullivan, owner of Meteor Music in Anderson, says his biggest sellers are 60's rock albums—Led Zeppelin, the Moody Blues, Pink Floyd. When asked the difference between a CD and a record, "In one word?" Sullivan says, "WARMTH." In his younger years, he even had a 45 player mounted to the dashboard of his car that played 14 albums at a time!
And did we say car? Those old tunes will resonate in your head when you stroll the Kool April Nites festivities. What classic car makes your heart skip a beat? A '68 Ford Mustang G.T. Fastback made popular by a chase scene in San Francisco by Steve McQueen or the '56 Ford Thunderbird driven by Suzanne Somers in "American Graffiti"? Take a cruise down memory lane, April 18th-20th.
It’s all about "the look", whether you are watching a parade of cars in jeans and a tee or a pageant of horses, with boots and belt, cowboy hat and well-worn wranglers. Don't get roped in by the impersonators... because the north state celebrates the real wild west.
