Giving Thanks
Published: 01-Nov-2008
Stop for a moment and feel the pulse of the season. Notice the sound of the snow crunching under your snowshoes and the laughter at the holiday table. Smell the waft of warm cinnamon as you take the first batch of banana bread out of the oven. Sit quietly and become aware of the present.
When times get crazy, we look for ways to comfort ourselves. One of those ways is to express our gratitude and count our blessings. Share stories of fond memories… find solace in a simple comment made by a wide-eyed child eating a corn dog in theMontague Corner Café: “You are a great cook,” he tells the 72-year-old chef with a grin.Watch as local shop owners get creative with progressive holiday shopping experiences that give reason to believe in local treasures. Take part in an authentic olive farm’s first crush as it opens up its doors to let patrons experience the first drops of their golden oil. These are wonderful times that bring families together and make the holidays richer.
With smaller budgets, we’re given permission to enrich our gifting habits and add giving back to the message. You can find beautiful artwork at a local gallery whose artists are developmentally disabled adults who have a desire to pursue creativity. The purchase of the art piece helps make life a little better for these extraordinary people.
Remember the powerful message of going green and take recycling to a whole new level by shopping at the Salvation Army stores and turning salvage into style. With a little creative thought and some help fromMom and Dad (as I did), you can give a shabby cloth-covered chair a place of honor in someone’s home. You can also give the priceless gift of sharing the North State with friends and family with a gift subscription to Enjoy.
As you read our November issue, remember this quote from one of our fine local artists, Chuck Prudhomme: “Art is a solo thing. It isn’t about making money. It’s about enjoying the process of capturing a moment in time.” This is our time… so look at all your fingers and toes and count your blessings. Happy Thanksgiving.
