A New Chapter
Published: 01-Sep-2008
A refreshing start for the school year. A return to restoring order in our lives. Putting our toys and camping gear away to make way for fall festivals and fundamentals. The reconvening of moms at local coffee shops. The chance to zip up those boots you bought last spring and haven't worn. The suspense of waiting for that first smell of rain. What can we do this fall to enrich our lives?
If you wake up early one cool North State morning and want to get outside, you'll be in good company with SWEAT (Shasta Wonderland Elite Athletic Team). These triathletes, bikers and runners embrace anyone who wants to lead a healthier lifestyle. Their T-shirts are worn like trophies - the more faded, the better!
When your kids ask for ideas on “what I did on my summer vacation,” remind them of the cool, 46-degree Subway Cave. Remember the discoveries, like you were the first to explore this natural wonder. Tell the teacher about the tale of the lava tube that’s rumored to be filled with U.S. Cavalry rifles, stockpiled to combat a Native American uprising.
Celebrate our western heritage with the Cottonwood Old West Art, Wine and Music Festival. On the way to the “Half-Pint Hootenanny” you might even come across an authentic gunfight on Front Street. Find out why in 1890 Cottonwood was also known as “Fist City.”
Or experience the Montague Balloon Fair, where every September, the dawn sky hosts a rainbow of balloons that make a mass ascension into the cool mountain air. Celebrating 14 years, the kaleidoscope of green pastures, barns and waterways pay homage to the passengers of these drifting balloons moving lazily in the lofty currents.
And although we’ve fallen back into fall, let this be a reminder that there’s nothing wrong with having your head in the clouds every once in a while.
